What should a small engine mechanic charge?

Small engine work is priced by the repair, not the clock. Here's how independent and mobile small engine pros set their prices, plus free calculators to find your number.

What should you charge an hour?

Before the spring mower rush stacks up, find the bench rate that pays for your time.

The small engine & outdoor rate behind SideWRK's estimating defaults is $65/hr, with 70% of a typical ticket paying for time rather than materials. Both numbers come from our 2026 Side-Work Rate Report, which publishes the same figures for all 42 trades.

Small-engine FAQ

What equipment does SideWRK handle?

Mowers, chainsaws, trimmers, blowers, snow blowers, generators, pressure washers, tillers, pumps, ATVs, UTVs and snowmobiles. You log each unit by type, brand, model and serial number — no VIN required.

Do I need to scan a VIN?

No — small-engine and outdoor power runs on serial numbers, so SideWRK skips the VIN entirely and logs the unit by make, model, and serial instead.

Can customers approve estimates from their phone?

Yes. You send a branded link; the customer reviews the estimate and photos and taps Approve — recorded with their name, the time, and the amount.

I fix mowers AND wrench on cars — can I do both?

Yes. Every trade is unlocked and you switch between small engine, mechanic, handyman and more in a tap, sharing one customer list. One subscription, one app.

What should a small engine mechanic charge?

Most small engine pros price by the repair, not the hour — a tune-up commonly runs about $50 to $100, with parts marked up 25 to 50 percent over cost, plus a diagnostic or pickup fee. Your number depends on your overhead, area, and turnaround. Use the free hourly rate calculator to find your number.

How much does it cost?

SideWRK is $19/month. Every trade is included. You start on the free plan: five jobs a rolling year, no card, and no expiry. Paying lifts every limit — $19 a month, or $190 a year.
