Sell the film tier, protect the removal

Tint pricing is a menu, not a meter: the labor on a sedan is the same afternoon whether the film cost you $40 or $140, so the tier you sell decides the ticket. Lead with carbon as the default, offer ceramic as the heat-rejection upgrade — it sells itself in summer — and keep dyed only for the price shopper who asks. The two quiet profit lines are removal, billed per window because baked adhesive is real labor, and the two-front match on trucks that came with factory privacy glass: forty minutes of work at a clean price. And quote legal: net VLT documented on the invoice beats an argument at a traffic stop every time.

Questions

How much does window tinting cost?
By film tier and vehicle. In 2026 a basic dyed full sedan runs $150–$250, carbon lands $250–$450, and ceramic runs $400–$800 on a sedan — an SUV or three-row adds 30–60% because there is simply more glass. Two front windows matched to factory privacy glass run $80–$150. A typical solo mobile ticket lands between $250 and $550.
Is dark tint legal?
That depends on the state. Every state sets a minimum visible light transmission (VLT) per window, and enforcement measures film and glass combined — a 35% film over factory glass reads darker than 35% on the meter. Windshield film below the AS-1 line is illegal in most states; a sun strip above it, or clear high-VLT ceramic where allowed, is the legal windshield play. Quote what is legal for the customer’s state, and document the film VLT and net VLT on the invoice.
Why does ceramic cost so much more than dyed film?
Dyed film darkens the glass and fades in 2–4 years. Carbon holds its color for 5–7. Ceramic blocks 90%+ of infrared heat — the thing that makes a parked car miserable — and typically carries a lifetime film warranty, so it earns its $400–$800 price. The install labor is nearly the same; the film and the warranty are what you are selling up.
What should tint removal cost?
Per window — $25–$60 professionally, with the front pair often quoted $60–$100 together. Old film means baked adhesive: heat, scrape, and clean before a single new piece goes on, and a rear window with defroster lines is the slowest glass on the car. Never fold removal into the tint price silently; it is its own labor.
How does flat glass (home / office) price?
Per square foot, installed. Residential heat-control and privacy film typically runs $7–$14 per sq ft professionally installed, with security and specialty films above that. Measure the glass, not the wall — and price the minimum visit; a two-window job still costs you the drive.
