Order once, spread once

The fastest way to lose a morning is a second trip for more mulch. Measure the beds, pick a depth (3 inches for a fresh bed, 2 for a top-off), and order by the yard once you are past a handful of bags — bulk is cheaper and delivery beats loading your truck five times. Price the material at your supplier rate, add the spread labor by the yard, and the bed pays for itself.

Questions

How much mulch do I need?
Cubic yards = area in square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324. One cubic yard covers about 100 sq ft at 3 inches deep (162 sq ft at 2 inches, 81 at 4). Beds usually want 3 inches; a refresh over existing mulch wants 2.
How many bags of mulch in a yard?
A cubic yard equals about 13.5 bags of the standard 2-cubic-foot size, or 9 bags of a 3-cubic-foot bag. Over roughly 5–6 bags it is almost always cheaper to buy bulk by the yard and have it delivered.
Is mulch or gravel sold by the ton?
Bulk gravel and topsoil are often priced by the ton — a cubic yard of gravel weighs about 1.4 tons and topsoil about 1.15, so this tool shows both cubic yards and tons. Mulch is sold by the yard or the bag.
